The Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, Rt Rev. Prosper Samuel Dzomeku, has called on the Church in the country to assume its responsibility as environmental stewards to help protect the environment.
Rt Rev. Dzomeku expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the country’s vegetation cover due to illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey”, and called on churches to revive the campaign of educating its members on the need to protect the environment. The moderator added that the clergy and the Christian community must support the government’s efforts to clamp down on galamsey activities, emphasising the need for Christians to live by biblical principles and avoid engaging in activities that harm the environment.Rt Rev. Dzomeku was speaking during the commissioning of Reverend Ministers at the GEC El-Shammah Chapel in Tesano-Accra last Sunday. The programme saw nine ministers welcomed into the fold as leaders of churches they have planted under the GEC.
They were Andrew Dotsey Agbemasu, Samuel Ahiadzo-Amenuveve, Bismark Asempapah, Karl-Max Asempapa, Jonathan Agbesi Kofi Bohlishie, Selorm Deyegbe, Bright Atsu Fometu, Selase Bless Fumey and Asiwome Tei-Mati.
National developmentThe moderator underscored the importance of imbibing Biblical principles in national development, adding that the church had a critical role to play in promoting peace, stability and moral values in the country. In resetting the country, Rt Rev. Dzomeku called for collaboration between the church and the government, emphasising the need for Christians to live by the word of God and follow good policies rolled out by the government.
“If the church is going to help in reviving this country, we have to agree with the President to reset the country.“We, Christians, being in the majority, have the duty to live our lives by the word of God and try to follow the good policies that the government is rolling out.We have to see the good in it,” he said. The moderator said efforts must be made by the church to promote harmonious living as well as peace and stability in the country, citing the need for Christians to control their anger and seek redress through legal avenues rather than taking the law into their own hands.“If we preach peace to our people, our people will not go out there to fight at the polling station or get involved in the series of killings that go on.
People who are truly living by the Christian faith, will not kill their neighbours. “We need to pray and we need to teach people to control themselves, to control their anger,” he stated.Message to newly commissioned PastorsRt Rev. Dzomeku encouraged the newly commissioned Ministers to depend on God and be obedient to his laws to grow their churches, and be models to their members. He called on the reverend ministers to train their members using the Bible, and never taking their members for granted. The moderator said the theme of the Global Evangelical Church this year, “Preach the Word,” underscored the importance of evangelism, thereby calling on the new ministers to have evangelism at heart and also disciple already converted members to be ardent followers of Jesus Christ.
