Most Reverend Fr. Alfred Agyenta, the Catholic Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, has called on security personnel deployed to the Upper East and North East Regions to exhibit the highest level of professionalism in maintaining law and order, particularly in the Bawku conflict.
In the wake of increasing tension in Bawku and its surrounding communities, it has become necessary to deploy the military to curb the heightened insecurity in the areas. However, there have been several reports in the past regarding military brutalities in their line of work.
This has necessitated the call by the Bishop of the Catholic Church in Navrongo-Bolgatanga to bring to the attention of the military high command to admonish their men to exhibit a high level of professionalism, as the Ghana Armed Forces is noted for.
Bishop Agyenta emphasized that the Catholic Church remains active on the ground despite the growing insecurity, with personnel continuing to support vulnerable communities where possible.
“We have not withdrawn our personnel because we believe they need to stay and help those who are suffering,” he said.
“But we need security and protection. That is why we are calling on the government to act so that once life and property are secured, we can continue engaging with the people and assist them.”
The bishop underscored the urgent need to restore safety, especially in schools and communities in need of humanitarian support.
“There are people suffering, and we are unable to reach them because the area is not secure. We used to deliver food to vulnerable groups on both sides of the divide, but now we cannot even get supplies to them,” he added.
“This points to the urgent need for government intervention to save the lives of people living in the region.”
